Preface by Ambassador Du Ling
Cultural activities offer perhaps one of the best opportunities for the people of different nations to develop mutual understanding. I am very glad that the Pretoria Art Museum hosts an international exhibition by Max Chiwei Liu, an established and renowned painter from Taiwan . This first exhibition by an artist from Taiwan at the Museum will show a window of Taiwan ’s contemporary art to people of South Africa .
Max Liu is also a distinguished writer, adventurer and anthropologist. He has traveled to many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America for the study of primitive vultures and is an author of more than thirty books on the anthropology of art. His love of nature and enchantment with primitive art made him choose wildlife his favourite subject of painting. His wide popularity in Taiwan has earned him a reputation of legendary character.
At the age of ninety-one, Max Liu remains very active. He is an enthusiastic volunteer forest police in Taiwan . His devotion and dedication to the environment and wild life protection, in his life as well as in his works, makes this exhibition agree to the prevailing cause of nature conservation in South Africa .
The Taipei Liaison Office in South Africa is very grateful to the Pretoria Art Museum for their commendable efforts and assistance in making Max Liu’s exhibition possible. I would like to see more cultural exchanges between the people of Taiwan and South Africa in the new Millennium.
