The Pretoria Art Museum in South Africa has since its inauguration in 1964 hosted many international exhibitions, thanks to the goodwill of foreign countries and sponsors. This first exhibition by an artist from Taiwan , the renowned painter and former engineer, author and anthropologist Max Chiwei Liu, is brought to the City of Taiwan by courtesy of the Taipei Liaison Office in Johannesburg .
We are indeed honoured to present an exhibition of contemporary art from Taiwan and we hope to once again welcome this distinguished artist (at the age of 91) to our country. As a result of his interest in cultural anthropology he has over many years traveled extensively and has visited our shores before.
Not many can or will embark on another career after retiring from a profession at 60. Max Liu was inspired to take up painting at the age of 38 and besides being an artistic innovator, has injected a knowledge of Western art into Taiwan through his publications on modern painting and particularly on watercolors. Art offers mutual understanding and this exhibition should be warmly received in a country awakened to environmental issues and nature conservation.
The Pretoria Art Museum wishes to thank the Director General of the Taipei Liaison Office, Mr. John Ming-Liang Lee and Mrs. Alice Lee for their kind assistance in bringing this exhibition to South Africa and for sharing one of Taiwan’s great talents with us.
